Multi-year license options are now available if your dog's rabies vaccination expires in 2027 or later. A license cannot be issued beyond the year of the rabies vaccination expiration.

Note that all license tags issued in 2026 are printed with an expiration date of 12/31/26, but the license may be valid for a longer period. Please retain the receipt sent with your tag as the record of the expiration date.

Licensing Ordinance

All dogs 4 months of age and older must be licensed annually with Prince William County by January 1st or within 30 days of turning 4 months old. Newly acquired dogs must be licensed within 30 days.

To license by mail:

  1. Enclose copies of all required paperwork. The license application below may be downloaded and included, but it is not required.
  2. Determine the correct license fee for each of your pets.
  3. Make your check or money order payable to “Prince William County.” Please do not send cash.
  4. Mail your paperwork and payment to:

  1. A current rabies vaccination certificate is required if the rabies vaccination on file has expired. Please check your certificate for correct address and pet information.

Due Date

Payment for your license is due by January 1st. If you are licensing for the first time, you must purchase a license within 30 days of obtaining a pet over the age of 4 months or within 30 days of moving into Prince William County.
