The cost for licensing unaltered or fertile pets is higher than for licensing spayed or neutered pets in order to promote sterilization and to reduce pet overpopulation.

All licenses expire annually on December 31 and must be renewed for the following year by December 31.
You may license by mail and pay for your license with a check or money order made payable to “City of Chesapeake.”
You may license online and pay for your license with a major credit card. A convenience fee will apply per transaction. Multiple pets can be licensed in one transaction.
You may license in person at City of Chesapeake Treasurer’s Office locations, Parks and Recreation Visitor Center and participating veterinary clinics. Please bring a copy of your pet's current rabies certificate and proof of spay/neuter.
- A current rabies vaccination certificate is required if the rabies vaccination on file has expired. Please check your certificate for correct address and pet information.
- Proof of spay/neuter, such as a signed statement from a veterinarian or an invoice for services, is required if the pet has been altered since the last licensing period and you are applying for the lower spayed/neutered license fee.
Your paperwork will not be returned to you, so please retain a copy of your documents for your records.
To license by mail:
- Enclose copies of all required paperwork. The license application below may be downloaded and included, but it is not required.
- Determine the correct license fee for each of your pets.
- Make your check or money order payable to “City of Chesapeake.” Please do not send cash.
